Add a Kitchen Backsplash - Counselor Realty

Does your kitchen need updating? If you're looking to freshen up this important space before listing your house among White Bear Lake homes for sale or Victoria homes for sale, consider adding a new kitchen backsplash.

It just so happens this recommendation comes in time for a celebration of tile on Feb. 23 for National Tile Day. In recognition of the beauty and versatility of tile, let's explore some tips for choosing the right one for your kitchen.

Tile in the Home Today

It wasn't too long ago that only the wealthy could afford tile. But after mass production began to make it more available, its use in the American kitchen, bathroom, and even elsewhere in the home expanded dramatically. Tile today is recognized for its versatility and beauty, varied styles and designs, low maintenance, and durability. Tile can be tiny or large and made of ceramic, stone, terracotta, stone, porcelain, concrete, glass, or composite materials.

Some Tips for Choosing Tile

  1. Decide what sort of focus you want your backsplash to have.
Choose tile patterns and colors that retreat into the background if you want the focus to be on the countertop or the appliances. Choose something more vivid and eye-catching if you want the tile backsplash to be the center of attention. Go with a main color accented by other hues throughout the kitchen.

  2. Have fun with shapes, styles, patterns, and textures.
Are you planning to stay in your home, or will you move in a few years? Is this the backsplash you want to look at in five or 10 years? These factors can help you decide how fun and free-spirited you want to be with your backsplash. You could go trendy if your time is limited in this home, and you plan to redo it when you sell, or you could choose subway tile—always popular, although you might want to jazz it up with a new herringbone pattern or a different color of grout.

  3. Have a look at it in different lighting situations.
Home stores and other tile purveyors will likely give you some samples to take home. You may want to try them out before you buy them to see how they look in your kitchen. Try it at different times of the day and in different lighting situations to see if you can live with it all day long. Tape the samples to the wall. Try matching colors and mixing materials.

  4. Think about ease of cleaning.
Solid tiles, whether glossy or matte, show fingerprints and smudges more than patterned tiles. And when it comes to stone, don't rule it out because you think it will show stains. Sealers are a lot better than they used to be.

  5. Don't blow your budget on the backsplash—unless you can afford it.
If you're working with a budget, there's nothing wrong with simple white tile for the backsplash. It's inexpensive, and it's always in style. But if you want to spend a little extra, choose some nice grout. Want to go all out? Then go for high-end glass tile. It's beautiful and makes an elegant statement. Moreover, it's non-porous, stain resistant, and doesn't harbor germs and bacteria.
