Trains can do far more than just take you from one place to another. The best train rides are an experience. They also make a great outing for families. If you're looking for Minneapolis homes for sale, you'll be happy to know there are some amazing train rides in and around the twin cities. Here are our favorites.
- Amtrak Empire Builder - St. Paul Union Depot
The Amtrak Empire Builder is just a commuter train, but it will take you through some of the best scenery in Minnesota. If you're looking for a fun day trip, the train leaves from St. Paul and has stops near Winona, Staples, Red Wing, and Detroit Lakes homes for sale. Or, if you're planning a vacation, it will take you as far as the West Coast, including Portland and Seattle. Whatever you're looking for, this is the commuter train to use.
- Excelsior Streetcar Line - 337 Water St, Excelsior, MN 55331
Located in Excelsior, about half an hour outside Minneapolis, this antique trolley is worth the trip. While the Empire Line will take you all over the stake, the Excelsior Streetcar Line has a trip of about half a mile. However, where it goes is back in time. The 15-minute journey includes photos of the area as it was in the 19th century, exhibits at a historic rail station, and a view of a restoration in progress of an old streetcar. There are events throughout the year, such as Trolleyween in October, Jingle Bells Trolley in December, and the Story Time Trolley year-round, combining the ride with a bedtime story for children.
- Como-Harriet Streetcar Line - 2330 West 42nd Street, Minneapolis, MN 55410. The sister line to the Excelsior, the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line is another short ride with plenty to see and do. Running from Minneapolis to nearby Lake Harriet. Operated by the Minnesota Streetcar Museum, it's a great trip for kids and offers events such as the Streetcar Murder Mystery or their Halloween event Streetcar Named Expire.
- Milwaukee Road 261 - Saint Paul Union Depot
The Milwaukee Road 261 is a steam locomotive that operates near Saint Paul homes for sale. Saved from demolition and restored in 1991 by the Friends of the 261, this train line now has excursions all over the Twin Cities. But the real appeal is in the journey. A variety of beautiful and comfortable train cars let you ride in style, from a lounge to a dining car to private compartments. Foodies will particularly love their Gourmet Express excursion, which includes a delicious meal, specialty wines, craft beers, and beautiful scenery the whole way there and back. It's an experience not to be missed.
- Pumpkin Express Train - 114 Depot Road, Osceola, WI 54020
The Pumpkin Express Train is a great fall activity located in nearby Osceola, WI. The historic train takes you to a pumpkin patch in the town of Dresser, about 25 minutes away. It has music, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and even a flea market. Plus, you can tour the historic train depot from 1884.
