It also happens to be the city's oldest park, established in 1959, and offers picturesque walking paths and wide-open fields that provide prime sledding and snowman-building territory. One of Minnesota's largest lakes, Lake Minnetonka is also one of the best fishing destinations in Minnesota. In winter, the lake freezes over, and anglers from all over the state flock to the Wayzata area to try their hand at ice fishing. With abundant populations of walleye, muskie, and panfish, it's rare for the lake to send a dedicated fisherman home empty-handed. You'll see some of the oldest trees in the region here, including maples that date back 350 years. You may want to don a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis in snowy conditions. This is also a favorite local bird-watching spot, so be sure to keep an eye out for some of Minnesota's native winter birds, including northern cardinal, red-bellied woodpecker, and white-breasted nuthatch. - Baker Park Reserve - 2309 Baker Park Rd, Maple Plain, MN 55359
Just 15 minutes from Wayzata, Baker Park Reserve encompasses 2,700 amazing acres of spectacular natural landscapes. The reserve looks its best with a fresh coat of snow and offers many miles of groomed multi-use trails that are open to hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat-tire mountain biking, and even dog sledding. There's also a sledding hill and a clubhouse where you can warm up and rent skis, snowshoes, and sleds. It has yet to be determined if the clubhouse will be open for the 2020/21 season, but all the trails in Baker Park Reserve remain open for use. - Gale Woods Farm - 7210 County Rd 110 W, Minnetrista, MN 55364
A public park that also happens to be a working farm, Gale Woods Farm is a year-round destination for Wayzata residents looking for some quality time in the great outdoors. In winter, the farm's trail system is open to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. You can explore tranquil forests and wide-open meadows with splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Plus, there's always a good chance you'll get to see some of the cows and other animals that call the farm home!
