You really don't need an excuse to eat ice cream, but since July 1 marks National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, it's the perfect chance to indulge in an out-of-the-box flavor.

The Twin Cities and their surrounding areas have many local ice cream shops that are worth a stop for a sweet treat. If you're looking for Minneapolis homes for sale or St. Paul homes for sale, or if you already call this area home, try a new flavor at one of the following ice cream shops.

Ice cream is deliciously homemade at Flapdoodles, located near Rochester homes for sale, so you'll want to check their website for available flavors before you go. You'll often find traditional but upgraded flavors along with more unique creations like Rum Cherry, which has Dark Bordeaux cherries mixed in rum-and-cherry-flavored ice cream. Each selection also helpfully includes a list of possible allergens. With fun names like the Flabbermast and the Flagship, most ice cream dishes are served upside down, with the scoops of ice cream in a dish and the cone (what they call the sail) on the top. Family-owned Nelson's Ice Cream features generous portions of the sweet treat. Flavors are deliciously decadent and include licorice chip (black licorice chips in licorice ice cream) and caramel turtle cheesecake (complete with roasted pecans, cheesecake pieces with a chocolate cookie crust, and caramel sauce). And if you're going by the Stillwater area, you'll also find a Nelson's location there.
Fletcher's Ice Cream - 1509 Marshall St. NE, Minneapolis, MN 55413
Fletcher's Ice Cream, which is handcrafted in small batches, lets you indulge your taste for ice cream in a variety of ways. Try one or two scoops, or a milkshake, malt, or brownie sundae. If you're in the mood for an extra treat, order a Steam 'n Cream Waffle, with your choice of ice cream along with fresh whipped cream on a waffle. Flavors include mellow mango, root beer, and black licorice, and you can also add toppings like crushed Oreos or Butterfingers, strawberry sauce, or sour gummy bears.
Sweet Science Ice Cream - Keg and Case Market, 928 7th St. W., St. Paul, MN 55102
Sweet Science Ice Cream ice cream uses locally sourced and organic ingredients, making everything by hand, including every syrup and cookie. It's made in small batches in unique flavors like coffee toffee, blackberry sorbet, and rhubarb cinnamon almond. You can even enjoy a honey chamomile ale ice cream, which is made using Tin Whisker's Wheatstone Bridge Wheat Beer.
