Storage Space - Counselor Realty

Storage Space. No matter how big or small your home is, there never seems to be enough of it. This seems to become especially apparent when you're working to prepare your home to show to potential buyers. So how can you make sure that all of your belongings have a place to live before the first person walks through during an open house?

Our real estate agents take a quick look at tips to creating that extra space you need so that you can show your home in the best possible light.

  1. Get Rid of the Clutter
Before you start looking for storage solutions, take steps to get rid of the things in your home that no longer use or that aren't in good repair. This will automatically create some much-needed space and give you a jump start on getting things organized.

  2. Multipurpose Furniture
Furniture in your home that doubles as storage space can be an attractive alternative to more traditional storage solutions.
    • Storage ottomans
Storage ottomans are the perfect alternative to coffee tables, provides extra seating, and includes hidden storage.  Storage ottomans can be used in nearly any room of the home and provide an upgrade to your décor in addition to the additional space for your things.

    • Storage chests
A storage chest can double as a bedside table or accent piece in your living room.  You can store items in the chest as well as use it as a display piece.

    • Storage beds
Bedrooms are one of those rooms that never seem to have enough storage space.  A storage bed with drawers or storage spaces underneath can provide the perfect place to put extra clothes, towels, baskets, or other things that you need.  If a storage bed is not an option, bed risers are a less expensive alternative that can also provide you with additional storage space underneath.

    • Knee Wall Drawers
If you have a pocket of hidden, unused space in your home, here's your chance to utilize this space and turn it into valuable storage.   Short walls in bedrooms and attic spaces can be turned into drawer space.
  1. Go Vertical
Can't go out any longer? Go up. Look for ways to utilize the vertical space in your home to provide for extra storage space.
    • Stackable storage
Stackable bookshelves and baskets can provide multiple times that storage space, while not taking up any additional floor space of your home.  Floor-to-ceiling shelving units can also help the space to look bigger, potentially appealing to buyers who are viewing your home. Pieces like nested tables can provide extra space when you are entertaining, but be stored away when not in use.
    • Wall Storage
Your wall space provides to perfect opportunity to create much-needed storage space.  Things like wall mounted spice racks in the kitchen or mounted shelving in the living room can add design and function to these areas of your home. Wooden ladders mounted against the wall can also provide a place to store things that would ordinarily pile up on a flat surface without sacrificing lots of floor space.

    • Loft beds
Rather than bunk beds in a child's room, a loft bed can provide a wonderful alternative.  Space underneath can be used to house a desk for studying or as additional play space and toy storage.
