Minneapolis Lowry Avenue Bridge

Counselor Realty agents know that there's lots to love about homes in Minneapolis and the amazing Twin Cities culture. Even though Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota and plays host to nearly 400,000 permanent residents, the community is amazingly close-knit.

There is, perhaps, no greater symbol of that fact than the Lowry Avenue Bridge.

The Lowry Avenue Bridge Helps Groups Reach Out to Their Minneapolis Community

Although the Lowry Avenue Bridge is pretty to look at, you wouldn't be able to tell just how special it is the first time you see it. The basic facts about it are simple. It carries four lanes of traffic. Revitalized with new truss spans in 1958, it was originally established all the way back in 1905.

It was most recently rebuilt and refreshed starting in 2010 and reopened 2012.

With a width of 107 feet and a total length of more than 1,500 feet, this basket-handle tied-arch bridge is striking – but there are many others like it all around the United States. So, what is it that makes the bridge truly special? It's how people have used it over the years.

In effect, it's one of the most memorable community message boards anywhere in the world.

This unique Mississippi River crossing is often lit up at night, and the inspiration for the displays may surprise you. In just the brief time since the bridge's 2012 reopening, over 100 different nonprofits and other groups throughout the community have been marked with their own bridge light show.

The whole span of the bridge can be completely lit up with almost any colors you can imagine.

For example, November 2012 saw the arch lit in red, white, and blue in honor of Veterans Day.

Organizations can apply directly to the government of Hennepin County to have their special day or group highlighted with a color scheme. This is an amazing way for people to connect over the causes that make a difference for them and those they care about.

The special lighting will always be visible from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the given day. Applications must be filed 14 days before the expected date of lighting. Though demand has steadily grown each year, response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Some causes that have been honored with the Lowry Avenue Bridge treatment include:

  • Twin Cities Pride Festival
  • Children's Mental Health Awareness Week
  • The Star Tribune
  • The Multiple Sclerosis Society
  • The Artist Formerly Known as Prince

The bridge is very popular, and not everyone can be served, of course – but those who do make a successful application won't have to worry about any fees or additional work on their end. It is simply a unique feature of the community that anyone can enjoy.

And it's one of the many things you'll have the chance to appreciate in person here in Minneapolis!
