Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum - University of Minnesota

Weisman Museum Brings Modern Art to Life
Opened in 1934, Weisman Art Museum is a teaching museum for the University of Minnesota. Students at the university have the opportunity to enrich their scholarship with exhibits aligned with their curriculum as they advance in their studies.
Weisman is characterized as a modern art museum, though its collection includes more than 25,000 images total that run the gamut of styles and backgrounds. Here, you can find Native American pottery and traditional Korean furniture alongside painting and photography.
The museum is particularly well known for its building designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry. Its stainless steel outer covering gives it a striking appearance. It also sits on one of the most desirable overlooks on campus, granting a breathtaking view of the Mississippi River.

Recently, the museum garnered nationwide press with an in-depth look at the groundbreaking music and inspiring life of Minneapolis native Prince. Running since December, Prince from Minneapolis features photography, portraits, and items from Prince's life.
The exhibit continues to draw crowds and will run through the first week of June.
Vanishing Ice is another groundbreaking exhibit that calls on visitors to take a fresh look at the frozen tundra of the Arctic. Focusing on how frozen landscapes have inspired artists throughout the centuries, it showcases 47 artworks created between 1860 and 2017.
Of course, you don't have to wait for a special exhibit to be active if you want to spend a great day learning at Weisman Art Museum. Its permanent collection is truly one of the most memorable assortments of modernist art in the whole region.
As you visit the rest of campus, you'll also encounter more than a dozen amazing sculptures and other pieces of public art that commemorate major moments and figures from the history of the University of Minnesota and the Twin Cities at large.
